An animal behavior consultant evaluates why an animal behaves the way it does. Rather than focusing only on teaching behaviors, behavior consulting examines the factors influencing behavior, including learning history, environment, emotional state, welfare, motivation, and medical considerations. The goal is to understand the function of behavior and develop evidence-based recommendations that improve both behavior and quality of life.

A veterinarian evaluates medical issues and physical health. A dog trainer typically focuses on teaching skills, cues, and manners. An animal behavior consultant looks at the underlying emotional or environmental causes of complex behaviors (like fear or aggression) and how they interact with the animal's learning and welfare.
