Understanding Behavior Like a River
The behavior we see is like the water flowing through the New River Gorge. It is visible, immediate, and often what captures our attention. But rivers are shaped by everything upstream. Tributaries, terrain, weather, and the surrounding environment all influence how the river flows. Behavior works the same way. Genetics, learning history, environment, welfare, stress, and reinforcement all contribute to the behaviors we observe. My goal is not only to address the behavior itself, but to understand and address the factors upstream that are influencing it.
